Orientation - Spring 2012
Welcome to the University of Utah family!
We’re excited to meet you this Summer!
The International Center will be holding International Welcome Week this SUMMER for all new international students. You should plan to arrive in Salt Lake City on or before May 8th. You must be here by May 9th.
During International Welcome Week, you can meet new friends, meet University faculty and staff, and participate in lots of events designed to help you have a great first semester at the U!
Please note that you are required to attend some of the events during International Welcome Week, like Document Check In and a presentation on Immigration Requirements. So it is important for you to arrive in the U.S. on time!
You will need to do two things in order to get ready for your arrival at University of Utah.
1. INTERNATIONAL WELCOME WEEK ORIENTATION. Log in HERE to sign up for International Welcome Week Orientation events. There is no charge for these events but some of them are required by U.S. law and University policy, so please do this right now!
2. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ONLINE ORIENTATION There is a separate set of presentations called the International Center Online Orientation. The Online Orientation is not a substitute for the International Welcome Week sessions. The Online Orientation reviews what you need to do and when to do things in order to get ready to come to the United States. Our Online Orientation will give you very important information about getting your visa, immigration rules to follow, housing, choosing your classes, and the U.S. university system. The Online Orientation will also provide information on living in Utah and the US. You will receive an email invitation at your University email account (Umail) to join a Course in the University's online learning system called CANVAS. The Course is named International Student Online Orientation. The sender on the email is "Instructure Canvas," so please look for that email in your Umail inbox. The email invitation has a link to the Online Orientation.
If you don’t know how to access your University of Utah email account, please look at your Admission letter for more information, or you may email the university’s IT desk at helpdesk@utah.edu
Remember all new students must attend mandatory events during International Welcome Week, including freshman, transfer students, graduate students and exchange students. Other campus orientations do not replace the mandatory events. Failure to complete the required sessions during International Welcome Week and complete your Check-In will result in a “Hold” being placed on your student records.
Welcome Week & Check In:Location: Union Building Bring With You: Your I-20 or DS-2019, Passport, I-94 Card We will make copies and return the original documents to you. All new students must report to The International Center within 15 days of the beginning of the semester. Reporting to Check-In during International Welcome Week will meet this requirement. PLEASE BE SURE TO MEET THIS IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT! |
University of Utah Identification (the uNID, UMail and the UCard)Your University Network ID (uNID) & secure password uniquely identifies you on the campus network for various computing services. Everyone at the University of Utah receives a uNID. You were assigned your uNID when you were accepted to the University; you may find this number on the Admissions Statement mailed to you from the International Admissions Office. Your uNID is also known as your student identification number. UMail is the official form of communication at the University of Utah. The International Center as well as other on campus agencies, including your academic department and instructors will contact you by UMail. You were assigned your UMail account when you receive your uNID. The UCard is the official campus identification card (I.D. card) of The University of Utah and is used for library privileges, laboratory access, obtaining a bus/Trax-pass and other campus activities. You must be registered for classes before you are able to obtain the UCard. (U Cards are not available until you arrive on campus.) Check the UCard website for office locations and other information. |
